At the 2013 Annual Meeting and Conference in Orlando, FL, Whitworth University was one of three institutions recognized with the Models of Excellence Award for their exemplary work in teacher education.
Whitworth University (Category IV: Global Awareness and Action) – Whitworth University, located in Spokane, WA, “has a longstanding commitment to diversity and to providing students with an education that honors and supports diversity in a local as well as a global context.” Supporting the university’s mission statement “to provide its diverse student body an education of mind and heart,” the School of Education works diligently to incorporate global education, intercultural communication, and diversity throughout its delivered curriculum. For example, candidates are required to complete a January or May term “Field Immersion in Intercultural Education,” which has been required at the university since 1984. The experience is arranged by the SOE and has occurred in various contexts including Native American schools, inner city schools in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and international sites in Tanzania, South Korea, Thailand, and Jamaica. As one committee reviewer noted, Whitworth’s application was “extremely thorough” and supported their narrative with facts about “routine practices supporting each category.”
